I don't think that necessarily comes across as shallow. Different people get different thing from people, or whatever they want to focus on.
From a smile, yeah, you get a physical impression of someone, but you can also get an emotional impression from a smile too, I do.

I know it sounds shallow. And it's probably is too, but it's how it is. She is one of my least favorite members in H!P right now and not ONLY because of her looks/smile/whatever, but her awkwardness when she smiles and stuff is one factor. IF she would start being less awkward (and thus LOOKING less awkward) that would make me like her more.
To compare, Maasa can smile perfectly fine and she looks great with her short hair imo but she's still one of my least favorites. Chinami as well. I still wouldn't like Kana even if she had an amazing smile because I just have a hard time dealing with her personality at the moment, BUT having a cute smile could definitely gain her some + points.

Maybe I should have phrased it differently: If she was less awkward. That includes being able to smile without looking awkward.

Awkwardness is relative tho. To me I don't find Kana awkward. H!P members I find awkward ( the way Sohee explained ) are Wada, Maasa, Nakky and Sayubee.

..but I didn't even describe awkward, except for mentioning an awkward smile. In which case I can agree on Sayuki but not the other ones. I don't think they have awkward smiles at all.
And sure awkward smiles might be relative. But on top of that, Kana still can't talk to the camera naturally, she barely moves naturally on stage. That, combined with her weird/strange/whatever personality and inability to even just SMILE properly makes me... not dislike her. But just not like her as much as I do other girls. Would she be less awkward and just be able to smile properly that would give her quite a lot of plus points. That's all. Be it shallow or not.
