The Artist -- Made in the style of a late-1920s b&w silent film, it's the story of George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), a Douglas Fairbanks-esque silent film star facing the advent of the talkies, and Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), an up-and-coming young starlet who owes her career to him. Wonderful stuff.

The Secret of Kells (2009) – A fantastical telling of the real history of the famous Book of Kells, which was moved from monastery to monastery to protect it from Viking raids during the Dark Ages. Gorgeous animation and music, blending Christian symbolism with Celtic mythology, but definitely meant for young audiences; the characters and story are a bit too simple to hold the interest of more mature viewers.

Super 8 (2011) – Gen X nostalgia for Spielberg classics like E.T. and The Goonies, but with less magic and more violence. Also, Abrams' "monster at the corner of your eye" schtick has become as overplayed as Shyamalan's twist endings. I really wanted to like it but ultimately could not.

A Separation/جدایی نادر از سیمین
Oh dear Lord, this movie was absolutely brilliant. It shows the complex struggles of an Iranian family that is facing separation and the hardships they face as a result. All of it is so intertwined that it would be a bit ridiculous to outline the whole plot here, but seriously, go see it if you haven't already. I don't think I have ever felt so thoroughly sympathetic to the plight of every single character in a film before. They are all on opposing ends, but they are all also justified in their actions. Very hard to watch, I broke down once or twice, but so worth the everything.

Oh and the little girl who plays Somayeh is the cutest little angelfacedarling on the planet xD

Warlords (1988) -- Post-apocalyptic schlock from Fred Olen Ray. A mediocre film, despite a stellar B-movie cast including David Carradine, Sid Haig, Fox Harris, and Brinke Stevens.

Scabbard Samurai (さや侍) (2011) -- Downtown's Matsumoto Hitoshi puts his own quirky spin on the jidai-geki genre.

The Mystery of the Eiffel Tower (Le mystère de la tour Eiffel) (1927) -- The Pacific Film Archive screened the only known print of this silent adventure film, in the tradition of Feuillade's serials and an inspiration for the Tintin comics, in which a fake Siamese twin from a carnival sideshow inherits a huge fortune and runs afoul of a secret criminal organization called the Ku-Klux-Eiffel. The final chase scene takes place on the girders of the Eiffel Tower! Lots of fun, as was the live jazz accompaniment by Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project.
