tiny tiny #40 (3 Aug 2018)

Guest: Risa Ogata (Tsubaki Factory)

01:54~ Guest Talk, First Half
16:58~ Tiny Useful Goods: Saki Shimizu presents the DOSHISHA Otona Electric Shaved Ice Machine
25:45~ Tiny Message (i.e., viewer mail)
30:53~ Guest Talk, Later Half
38:49~ My tiny rule: Risa shows how she keeps her bag organized
46:06- My tiny trend: Miyabi Natsuyaki talks about gel nails
51:10~ Ending Talk

The new format is much more guest-focused, like the guest is being interviewed rather than simply commenting on the other segments, and the "tiny" lifestyle now serves more as a theme for that interview.

I think this is supposed to compensate for the discontinuation of MC slots on the other shows, and at the same time it gives fans — or at least fans of whomever is the guest each week — more reason to watch tiny tiny.

HA! That's funny because I was JUST looking for a shaved ice machine that wasn't one of those chunky ice pellet ones they sell. At least I now have a brand to go by.

I just really started to watch these but it's still very casual and only when it involves something of interest.

Hirose Ayaka's book recommendations for July 2018. (Rough summaries. A couple of things left out, I couldn't grasp what she was trying to say.)

March & May
June

1. Happy Birthday Inochi Kagayaku Toki (ハッピーバースデー 命かがやく瞬間; Happy Birthday: Shining Lifetime Moment; Re-Birthday) by Kazuo Aoki (青木和雄)
After experiencing abuse while living with her mother 11 year old Asuka is taken in by her grandparents and is slowly able to begin healing and learning of her worth as a person.
Spoiler: show
• The original release was a children's book published in December 1997. It has since been adapted into an animated film (1999), a comic (2005), and a drama (2009). A literary version was also published in 2005, credited to both Kazuo Aoki and Tomomi Yoshitomi (吉富多美).
• The children's book sold 650,000 copies. The literary version sold over 500,000.

• Ayaka first read the book after finding it in the library when she was in 2nd grade elementary. She'd never had any problems with her family so the story presented an unknown world to her; for the first time she thought the happy environment of her family might not be commonplace. She says something along the lines of her parents teaching her that Japan is a luxurious country from a young age, but she was made aware that it didn't matter how good your birth situation is (money, environment), it doesn't matter if you can live comfortably because if there's no love you still can't obtain happiness. She says this story made her feel it was impossible to say who was 100% bad or who was ultimately worse off. ...And something about thinking it's necessary to make time for family members to speak since communication tools like phones are now prevelant.

2. Elmer's Adventure (World Masterpiece Fairy Tale Series) (エルマーのぼうけん (世界傑作童話シリーズ); aka Elmer and The Dragons series or My Father's Dragon trilogy) by Ruth Stiles Gannett
A young boy named Elmer Elevator runs away to Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon.
Spoiler: show
• The first book was originally released in the United States in 1948. In the USA it was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal, and nominated for the Ambassador Book Award. It's been included in polls and journal rankings as one of the all-time top children's books.
• It was adapted into an animated film in Japan in 1997, under the title "Elmer's Adventure MY FATHER'S DRAGON) (エルマーの冒険 MY FATHER'S DRAGON).

• A book Ayaka read when she was a kindergarten student. There's a lot of hiragana so she found it easy to read and loved it; the illustrations are cute and exciting. When she read it she felt a sense of longing, because the main character is around 9 years old she would think "I wonder if I can become such a wonderful sister when I'm in third grade!!".

3. Nijushi no Hitomi (二十四の瞳; Twenty-Four Eyes) by Tsuboi Sakae (壺井栄)
Follows the life and career of schoolteacher Hisako Oshi from 1928 (Showa 3) through WWII and into 1946 (Showa 21) as she and her students are effected by the tragedies of war and the rise and fall of ultra-nationalism during the beginning of the Showa period.
Spoiler: show
• The book was originally published in 1952. The author herself lived through the war and used her experiences to depict the numerous hardships it brought to common people.
• It's been published in the USA and is currently available in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle edition.
• The story has been adapted 9 times in total; twice into film (1954, 1987), six times into television dramas (1964, 1967, 1974, 1976, 1979, 2005, and 2013), and once into an animated television special (1980). The most famous adaptation is the 1954 film (available in the USA as part of the Criterion Collection).

• Ayaka wrote a book report on this novel when she was in 5th grade elementary, but her feelings about it changed completely when she was in her second year of junior high. She wanted to re-write an impression and compare the two, and has memories of her teacher telling her to trim down her 6 pages before presenting the report.
• Her reading comprehension wasn't very advanced in 5th grade and it was easy to focus mainly on the war part (something about wanting it to be peaceful, and thinking her generation that hasn't experienced war should be remembered (? not sure). However, the author didn't place as much emphasis on direct depictions of war, and Ayaka thought at first the private and school lives presented in the book were happy and full of life, and she felt the image of those smiling faces contrasted nicely with the darkness and sadness of the later parts of the story. She wanted to think about how the people of that era might have felt.

• I was going to leave this out because I'm not quite sure I got the gist of it, but it felt like she was trying to say something nice:
Her final thoughts seem to say something about knowing we can't understand what it was like, and not only focusing on events of that era thinking we won't repeat them; thinking she could see another warm world come out if we make use of the thoughts of people from that time in the present.
