Anyway, I don't really like the "new" character designs, but I can't knock it because it's so close to Naoko's original manga style. I'll definitely give the show a try~

The use of non-2D CG has me, for the first time, seriously considering not watching. I'm getting really tired of this trend in shows. It's rarely used well and is rarely seamless, even here it's too obvious. If you're going to animate it with the intent of making it look 2D, just cut out the middle man and do it in 2D.

Add another thing to the slowly rising stack of small disappointments.

Animating in 2D via cell-by-cell style is faaar more expensive than animating a 3D model.
Honestly, from these previews I'm almost wishing that they'd animated the whole show with the 3D... but I'm withholding judgement until I see a full episode or two.

I know it's usually cheaper, but most studios don't seem to understand how to make it blend more with the style they're using (make it less obvious), or how to transition in and out of it well. This is no different.

My only hopes left are for good writing, and good voice acting for the rest of the cast. At least one of those.

So, in preparation for the new Sailor Moon, I've been watching the original series. Now, I'm aware that Crystal is meant to be an adaptation of the manga, but I'd never really watched the original anime, so I figured I needed to fix that.

I'm only 19 episodes in (I'm lazy as fuck), but I'm enjoying it so far. It's early days, but I think my favourite Senshi (not counting the ones who haven't shown up yet) is Mars, and I also like Mercury. I'm hoping I'll warm up to Moon, because she's been kind of annoying, but I hear she stops being so whiny later on. I don't dislike her, it's just that I'm never usually a fan of characters like her. I want to like her though!

I don't think it's gonna end up as one of my favourites (it's just not my preferred genre), but I totally get why lots of people love it, and I'm totally gonna check out Crystal when it airs.

Also, Nephrite is creepy and I do not like him at all.
