Ah... yeah I guess that would make sense... these boys I'm babysitting, one of them is 9 and he says "mama" when he talks to his mom. Then again I can't recall having heard the 13 year old say it...

It's a gender+age distinction. Japanese kids sometimes call their parents mama and papa. When they get older though, boys generally stop saying mama + papa, but girls can keep saying it all the way into adulthood. So like a dutiful 35 year old woman might often say "papa" to her dad but it sounds childish for a guy to use it. It's mentioned in passing
