"To all of you in Kenshuusei, I'm thinking of doing various things (within Hello! Project) so you still have chances."

I don't know if I wrote this in this thread already, but anyway. Tsunku said that the reason to why he didn't add Sakura to S/mileage was that she wouldn't be able to grow if she joined with several girls. Instead he put her in kenshuusei and now as Morning Musume, if she's put in there alone she will be able to grow and improve in a way she wouldn't if she was with a bunch of other girls. He also said that the girl has luck with her. For the S/mileage auditions she just happened to be there whenever Tsunku went to check things out - he didn't go everyday they had an interview after all - but Sakura was always there on the days that he arrived there, so she was lucky that he saw her so much.

From one of the videos of the rehearsal:
Sakura wants to become like Takahashi or Niigaki when it comes to singing. When it comes to dancing she wants to be like Nakajima Saki (C-ute).

After watching some footage her S/mileage audition again I can only say that I completely disagree with you on this one.

For an untrained person of her age she actually sounded very good at her 1st audition. She got the rhythm right and it's was in tune, the only thing that you could say is that was still unpolished. It was much better then most of the other girls and I'm not surprised that she became even better with her training as a Kenshuusei.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tsunku already decided back then and there that she might be a good addition for Morning Musume.

Maybe it was just me then? I liked her during the end of the S/mileage auditions, but her voice annoyed me a lot back then. That may have just taken over everything else in my memory.

^^ Her singing voice in that Smileage audition is hilarious. She's totally putting on a Smileage-style chipmunky singing voice. I'm glad she didn't join them so she was able to utilize her real, much more powerful singing voice instead of being forced to sing at the level of Kanon and Dawa. O HAI Meimi.

She did indeed sing it exactly like the original Uchouten Love. That just shows that she could already use her voice in several ways to fit the song, that's a quality.

need improvement

Just give it some time. Homegurl is like one of those girls who you don't think is that beautiful, but she'll come into her prime in due time. She's got a classic beauty about her, some Koyuki-esque qualities, and once she goes through the H!P makeover machine and has some time to grow, she will be quite beautiful. She is already pretty.

Sometimes her face reminds me of Miyabitch also lol. But she can dance and sang, and she's cute to boot, and has a nice enough personality. I was all meh at first, but seeing her more, I can understand why she was chosen. She may just usurp Riho as MM's new face. She has that quality that Acchan, or Nacchi has about them, in that you're kind of drawn to her and you just like her. Hopefully her personality doesn't turn out to be a dud ala Takahashi.

OK, I haven't defended Takahashi for a long time. Couldn't we just say, "introverted" or "not exceptionally outgoing" instead of a dud? I mean, Aichan has a lovely personality. It seems wrong to call her a "dud" simply because she's wasn't particularly demonstrative. And we're quick to blame her supposed blandness for the lull in Momusu's popularity, but let's face it, something much more fundamental has changed recently in H!P managment. The whole unit's been more agressively promoted - you can't blame the entire old way of doing things on Ai.

And by way of comparison Atsuko Maeda was lionized in Japan in her final days, despite having a personality that's just as ...unperky.. as Aichan's. That tells us that management has a big role in how the artist is perceived.

I AM CONFUSED.

Part of me wants to stan Sakura because I feel sorry for her, and she doesn't have many fans. But at the same time, I'm not a fan of her either.

WHAT DO?
