The girls playing instruments was a nice idea! The execution wasn't good though.
And that was boring and generic as you said. All of AKB music have the same beat, style and arrangement, that's why I got bored of it (old school akb was very good)

And they still aren't good singing live (that was live I suppose?), but as I've heard from many AKB fans, singing live isn't really important for them.

I can't really get into idol groups who can't sing live. I don't demand good singing by any means, just live singing I'd never pay to see any artist lipsync. It's just so atmosphere-crushing to see them live, dancing, jumping, and sounding exactly like on the CD. I remember a Ponytail performance with both AKB and SKE, and it still sounded exactly like the AKB CD version That's just lazy. The wota put more effort at concerts than the performers, just no.
