I think they will want to have some sort of a name that people will associate with the original name of the group. Otherwise they will be starting from scratch in name recognition.
I think that the three most iconic things about the original name was "Smile" (Their two challenges were based on getting people to smile), the "/", and the "age". I think you could get away with not having Smile in the name so long as you had the "/" and the "age" at the end. However, they would get more recognition with the Smile intact.
For example, you could add a sentai team name to the end of "Smile" and I think people would still associate the name with S/Mileage.
For example:
Smile Kamen
Smile Girls
Smile Rider
Smile Team
Smile Rangers

Nah, not really. Maybe if they were adding non-KSS members then yeah, but this still feels like a lesser announcement to me.
And the name change probably won't happen for a while yet, so it makes it not as big of an announcement.

After the 12ki announcement I think Tsunku is going to chose all of the least favorite KSS to debut in S/mileage.
