The first episode of H!M that I watched was part 1 of the 2003 shuffles special. That was my real intro to Morning Musume, and it confused the crap out of me.
But after that, I noticed the three little girls who sat at the back of the group and didn't say very much, because they were the ONLY ONES WITH BLACK HAIR. And of those three, the little cross-eyed girl that's how I thought of her at first was definitely the coolest.

I had already started becoming interested before then, probably around the time of Sou Da, but I count Dec 22 2002, the date I joined old JPM, as the day when my curiosity over this wacky Jpop girl group with an absurd number of members turned into being an official "fan." And that was a few weeks before the 6kis joined. I remember the excitement on the board when they were revealed, and myself at that time thinking that Sayumi and Reina looked confusingly alike, except for that huge mirror, lol.

sb was already a member before me even, so he goes way back too.

Anyway, so all my original members have been gone since Risa graduated.

I knew they existed probably before 2002, but I wasn't a fan until late 2004.

As for J-Pop in general, it's been about 10 years, which is nearly half my life, holy shit

I started listening to Shonen Knife in about 1996, but I didn't get into other Jpop/Asian groups (Puffy, ZONE, Youjeen, China Dolls, Twins) until about 2002. I had anctually been listening to Ayaya for about a year before I was very much aware of Morning Musume.

I've been into Jpop since 99' and I remember a bunch of people telling me back then that 98 was the golden year for Jpop and I'm still pissed I was a year off
