iZombie and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were both really good this week.

Between those and rewatching Community from the beginning on Hulu, this has been a good week of television for me.

I am so tired of what 20th Century FOX has done with its X-Men license/franchise. Everything since X2 (2003) has been more like a crappy mash-up than a real X-Men movie. (By comparison, Disney's MCU featuring the Avengers is practically "ripped from the pages".) I grew up reading and collecting The Uncanny X-Men and The New Mutants, so when I watch this stuff, I feel like my inner child is being beaten with a whiffle-ball bat: it doesn't leave any bruises, but it sure does sting.

Nevertheless, I somehow feel it is still my duty to post this…

Sophie Turner is getting more work, so that's something good to come out of this. I guess.

As someone who grew up with X-Men: The Animated Series...

...I find the Apocalypse in that trailer to be rather unimpressive.

I am so tired of everything "Star Wars". There's no escaping it, doesn't matter what I'm doing or where I am - can't even go to pick up medicine without seeing or hearing some kind of tie-in.

Amusingly enough Japan's really getting in on it as well. The convinience stores are covered and I see tie-in snacks everywhere. In fact one of my students asked me if I knew what Star Wars was the other day. It's funny because the original three movies (or the prequels) don't seem to have any kind of real following here.

The original trilogy had a following in Japan among the usual sci-fi otaku, back in the 1980s, but that decreased over time. It was just another fad, and it didn't become a cultural landmark there like it it did elsewhere. Why? Because in Japan, sci-fi and fantasy in general are much more lucrative, so there were plenty of new, homegrown franchises (e.g., Gundam, Macross) that featured the same tropes as Star Wars and appealed to the same audience.

In preparation for Thursday night, I pulled out my 20-year-old VHS box set of the original trilogy (no "special edition" nonsense, thank you very much) and I'm just now settling down with a mug of hot tea and some snacks to relive the magic. :)

This scene in last night's episode of Family Guy just about killed me:
