I'm looking forward so much to that too. Both scenarios.

I don't think I'd want Sayumi there, as awesome as it would be. The group might have a very large hill to overcome in the absence of Sayumi and if they did show up at Kohaku I think they should show what they can do without her. I however would want the new generation there as support and for them to do a medley that ends with them doing the Usa-chan peace pose. But that's just wishful thinking.

There's realistically very little chance of it happening (Sayu performing together with them at Kouhaku) so don't worry about it.
At any rate I think what the press meant when asking that question was whether they'll want to invite Sayu there as a guest there if they got invited, not as a performer. Maachan and Duu got overexcited and got ahead of themselves, that's why Ayumi interjected with a more sensible(still touching) answer.

From reading about the interview on other sites, Ayumi also said this that makes it a bit clearer.

By that time Michishige-san would've already graduated. That's why I want to show her just how much we've grown (thanks to her) there! I want Michishige-san to watch us perform there live at Kouhaku in person from the best seat in the house.

Maachan will be amazing on tv one day when she no longer needs a translator.
She's no longer as camera shy as before, she always has some funny/interesting things to say because of her ...unique view on things. She's never the type to have a problem talking with people but her vocabulary still hasn't caught up by the looks of it xD.

They really have to start working on those comment skills. Riho is getting there but she's really bad at ending them. Masaki is obviously all over the place. Kanon loses her train of thought... @.@ Mizuki, Ayumi, Sakura and Kudou are fairly okay. @.@ No one is even half-way to Sayu though.
Riho and Mizuki especially have to start working on it though. I'm sure Mizuki I'm sure will get there cause she's obviously not that far off from being able to give good comments. But Riho really has to work a bit more on it especially since even these days she gets to talk a lot and no matter who becomes leader, she's still the ace and thus will be required to talk even more from now on. She's good at talking and all, but she really can't end her comments very well and thus they end up being longer and saying the same thing again but in different words, than they would have to be. Which is exactly why things like these are good for them, so I hope they get to do something on their own this fall too.

Personally I think having good interviewee skills is a bit overrated; I've seen Tamori-san invite guests on to MS over and over again who had the interview skills of Korben Dallas on his way to Phloston Paradise.

But anyway, regardless I think that it's management who's at fault if at all. You can't leave it up to your young, inexperienced talent to just figure out how to be entertaining and wait for them to start working on it on their own. I mean ffs Korean agencies can give years of Japanese lessons to their talent. H!P can set up mock interviews now and again.

I agree though, it is management who's at fault. I'm not criticizing the girls per se, just saying that they're far from good at it -- especially 9ki when they have to take over after Sayu. They've been in for 3 years and you'd expect them to be better at it by now. Whether they're just dense or it's management not giving them enough practice is another matter imo. But like I said, that's why things like these are good -- they get practice at least.
