i've definitely seen newscasters go out and participate in things when it's a fun-type segment, but not on a regular basis.
also, this is Japan. they do things differently/more extreme here.

What are you expecting? She's the announcer-pool equivalent of an Egg, and Neo Sports is her first regular gig. Even when she did Morning Satellite (the early morning news report that's on before OhaSuta), she was the weather girl. Give her a few years to gain seniority.

It's been a special week on Moe×Kon, where they've been learning all about bicycling. (Bikes became the hot new thing in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami threw the usual modes of transportation into chaos.) It's better than usual because it's fun to see Konno so excited and Ueda so nervous, both about the same thing. At least watch the final episode…
